The opposition coalition comprising the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), along with the newly formed political party called The Democrats, has recently joined forces in a bid to end the presidency of Ibrahim Mohammed Solih.

The Democrats, seeking to gather supporters of President Mohamed Nasheed, have already announced their intention to collaborate with the PPM in organizing street demonstrations. In a significant development, the two parties held their inaugural formal meeting at the Ocean Library to discuss working together.

Following the meeting, representatives from both parties convened jointly with the media and proceeded to assess the necessary steps to bring an end to President Solih’s government.

“We have initiated the process of removing President Solih. Today marks a historic day. This endeavor will continue in collaboration with the PPM/PNC and The Democrats,” stated Ahmed Shiyam, a Member of Parliament.

The Democrats, actively participated in the discussion, expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs under President Solih’s administration, and affirmed their commitment to working with the PPM/PNC to rectify the situation.

Both the PPM and The Democrats have revealed their plans to nominate candidates for the upcoming presidential election. While the PPM intends to field former President Abdullah Yameen, who is currently serving a prison sentence, The Democrats have seen their ranks strengthened by the recent resignation of Nasheed from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), officially joining their movement.

When questioned about the potential for changes in their stance regarding the presidential election, Shiyam emphasized that the PPM/PNC would stand by Yameen as their candidate, both now and in the future, asserting that the party’s nomination principles would remain unchanged.

Azim did not provide a definitive answer regarding The Democrats’ stance on the matter. He affirmed their readiness to take any necessary steps to oust President Solih from power but stressed that their actions would be guided by the principles embraced by the party.
