Over 900 Tons of Plastic Waste Collected from Malé Area in Past Year

MV+ News Desk | June 11, 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that 922 tons of plastic waste were collected from the Malé area over the past year, based on data provided by Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) in conjunction with World Environment Day.

The statistics indicate that plastic waste volumes were highest during July, August, September and November. Of the total collected, 80 tons were gathered in both July and August, while 116 tons were collected in September and 135 tons in November.

In total, 228,056.35 tons of waste were collected from the Malé area during the past year. In addition to plastic, the waste included 131,713 tons of mixed waste, 44,684 tons of wet waste, and 22,121 tons of sand and construction or demolition debris. Other categories included 11,592 tons of bulk waste, 10,385 tons of wood, sawdust and leaves, and 861 tons of medical waste.

Further breakdowns show 310 tons of metal waste, 273 tons of expired goods, 122 tons categorised as other waste, 66.2 tons of sewage waste, 44.85 tons of glass and 11.3 tons of used oil.

The continued rise in waste generation in the Malé area has been attributed to population growth. Despite ongoing campaigns targeting single-use plastics, the percentage of plastic waste remains notably high. This trend underscores ongoing environmental challenges in the Maldives, where plastic pollution continues to threaten the country’s fragile ecosystems.
