The Parliament on Tuesday approved Moosa Rilwan as a member of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), following the resignation of former Vice President Ahmed Fazeen.
Fazeen resigned from the commission in April after a female employee at the commission accused him of sexual harassment. The case was submitted to the Maldives Police Service and the Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions, prompting an internal review. Although Fazeen has denied the allegations.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted the names of 10 candidates to Parliament for the vacant seat. The Committee on Independent Institutions reviewed the candidates and shortlisted five individuals who received over 75% in the committee’s evaluation.
The shortlisted candidates and their respective scores were as follows:
- Zeena Zahir – 85%
- Shimla Ahmed – 83%
- Moosa Rilwan – 81%
- Aminath Shiyana – 80%
- Zamath Ahmed Waheed – 78%
Despite ranking third among the top five, Rilwan was ultimately approved for the post after Parliament rejected the top three candidates during voting
During Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting, the committee proposed that voting proceed in order of the candidates’ scores, starting with Zeena Zahir. However, more than 50 MPs voted against Zeena, Shimla, and Shiyana in successive rounds, eliminating them from consideration. Moosa Rilwan was then put to a vote and received 70 votes in favour, with no votes against.
Moosa Rilwan has worked extensively with the state broadcaster Public Service Media (PSM), particularly at TV Maldives (TVM), where he has served as a television presenter and producer. He also has experience working as a public relations officer in several government departments.
