The Parliament has given its stamp of approval to the appointment of ambassadors to three countries, as put forth by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The newly appointed envoys are Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, who will serve as the Maldivian Ambassador to China; Shiuneen Rasheed, who assumes the role of Maldivian Ambassador to Bangladesh; and Mohamed Thaha, appointed as the Maldivian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

The selection of these candidates garnered unanimous support from all participating members of Parliament during voting session.

Dr. Fazeel Najeeb brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously held positions such as Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His background as an economist and his extensive tenure in various capacities within the Trade Ministry from 1987 to 2004 further bolsters his qualifications for the role.

Shiuneen Rasheed currently serves as the Joint Secretary at the Foreign Ministry. Notably, her nomination for the same position was put forward towards the conclusion of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s term; however, it was deferred by Parliament on the grounds that ambassadorial appointments should not be made at the end of a presidential tenure.

Both Dr. Fazeel and Thaha were participants in the People’s National Congress (PNC) primary for the 20th parliamentary election held on May 21. Dr. Fazeel contested for the Fuvahmulah Central constituency seat, while Thaha vied for the Holhudhoo constituency seat.
