The Parliament of the Maldives has successfully passed a report concerning the re-formation of committees, enabling the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to retain its majority representation.

This decision comes as a response to changes in the register prompted by the resignation of 12 members from the MDP. Subsequently, several parliamentarians switched their party affiliations, resulting in a deadlock within the Parliament, as political parties failed to reach a consensus on the new committee structure.

In an extraordinary sitting, the Parliament convened to deliberate on the report regarding the re-formation of committees. Members from the opposition coalition, composed of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), as well as the newly established The Democrats, presented 10 amendments to the report in an attempt to prevent the MDP from securing majority representation.

Nevertheless, the Parliament approved the report without these amendments, garnering 35 votes in favour and 14 against. Consequently, the MDP will maintain its majority representation in the standing committees.

The Committee on National Security Services, along with 16 other standing committees, encompasses a total of 183 slots. With 54 members, the MDP will be allocated 113 slots, while the 18 independent members will receive 35 slots.

The minority party PPM, with its five members, will be granted 11 slots. Moreover, the PNC and the Maldives National Party (MNP), both consisting of three members, will each receive five slots. Similarly, the Jumhooree Party (JP) and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), each comprising two members, will obtain five slots respectively.
