The Parliament dismissed a proposed constitutional amendment by Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb aimed at restricting the number of Members of Parliament (MPs) in the legislative body to 76, in yesterday’s session.
The proposed amendment underwent a vote yesterday but did not secure enough support, receiving a majority vote of 38-12 against it.
Ilyas Labeeb, a member of the Democrats party, advocated for a cap of 76 seats in Parliament, with 55 designated for electoral districts, 11 for the national list, and an additional eight and two for women and people with disabilities, respectively.
Presently, the constitution mandates representation for every 5,000 citizens, leading to an anticipated increase in parliamentary seats from the current 89 to 93 in the upcoming assembly.
The absence of a set limit on the number of MPs, coupled with concerns about the associated high expenditure on salaries and allowances, remains a matter of apprehension for many observers.
