Utility companies have announced that starting next month, penalties will be waived upon payment of bills, following the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s call for the public to waive penalties for prolonged non-payment of electricity and water bills.

The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will waive penalties on unpaid bills accrued until the end of last year. Customers will benefit whether they pay outstanding amounts in full or via an installment plan.

MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed noted that approximately MVR 17 million in penalties will be waived, with outstanding bills reaching MVR 45 million.

Similarly, the Fenaka Corporation is currently implementing steps to waive outstanding fines. STELCO will specifically waive penalties for domestic customers who have unpaid bills dating back to January 1st of this year.

Companies have stated that the relief measure will be available from April 1st throughout the rest of the year.
