The Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) has issued a call to the Majlis, urging them to resume the discussion of the Industrial Relations Bill and Occupational Safety and Health Bill.
The Industrial Relations Bill, which was submitted to Parliament by the Government, has been on hold since the initial parliamentary debate on 26th April 2023.
Shunana Mariyam, President of PILC, also tweeted earlier this month to pass these two important bills, citing them as, “necessary to enforce key fundamental rights.”
Both the industrial relations bill and the occupational safety and health bill have been pending in majlis for months. I urge @mvpeoplesmajlis to pass these two important bills necessary to enforce key fundamental rights. https://t.co/2YOqxj4Kgn— SHUNA⚡️ (@ShunanaMariyam) July 2, 2023
The proposed Bill aims to establish legal protection for the rights of workers and employers to form and operate unions.
According to the Bill, both workers and employers would have the freedom to form or join unions without requiring prior approval from any external entity.
Furthermore, the Bill allows for the formation of a federation that would collaborate with unions. Additionally, provisions are made for the registration of a ‘National Trade Union Centre’ and a ‘National Employers Union Centre.’
PILC works to advance justice & human rights via legal aid, legal awareness, advocacy, lobbying & legal reform. They have also been particularly vocal about labour rights in the Maldives.
