The Police Cyber Crime Centre, working in collaboration with the Anti-Scam Centre, has provided assistance to 1,095 individuals so far this year, according to data released.
During at a press conference, Maldives Police Service reported a sharp rise in cybercrime, with 814 cases recorded in 2025, representing a 90 percent increase compared to the previous year. Scams and fraud accounted for 66 percent of the cases, while other common offences included phone and social media account hacking, defamation, intimidation, and blackmail.
Authorities noted that 10 percent of the reported cases were linked to blackmail operations originating overseas, heightening concerns among law enforcement agencies.
Police stated that the Cyber Crime Centre has assisted victims in recovering access to compromised accounts and strengthening their digital security. At present, 111 cybercrime cases remain under active investigation.
Special focus is being placed on illegal online confession pages that target students, parents, and teachers. Police confirmed that three administrators of such pages have been taken into custody, 19 pages have been removed, and a further 30 pages are currently under surveillance.
Established in 2021, the Police Cyber Crime Centre has also recorded significant regional achievements. Through an Interpol-supported operation, more than 20,000 malicious IP addresses and domains have been eliminated. In August, the launch of a new Cyber Security Operation Centre marked a major development in enhancing national cyber defences for government institutions and the general public.
