The Maldives Police Service has destroyed more than 500 unclaimed vehicles, the majority of which were motorcycles, following their impoundment for various traffic and parking violations.

According to a statement shared by the police on the social media platform X, a total of 568 vehicles were destroyed on Saturday, 31 May 2025. This included 524 two-wheelers and 44 four-wheelers.

The destroyed vehicles had been impounded during special operations targeting illegally parked and abandoned vehicles in Malé City and Hulhumalé. These operations, which began in September last year, were aimed at improving road access, particularly for public transport and emergency services. The police have conducted these efforts in collaboration with the Malé City Council and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

Authorities had noted a significant issue with street congestion in the capital. In July 2024, the Ministry of Transport stated that parked vehicles occupied around 65 percent of Malé’s streets, contributing to traffic congestion and increasing the risk of accidents.

In accordance with regulations, the police are authorised to destroy vehicles that remain unclaimed for 60 days following a public announcement of their custody. The vehicles destroyed on 31 May had remained unclaimed despite the necessary notices being issued.
