Police Report Over 1,400 Cases in Early 2026, Traffic Accidents Lead Statistics

The Maldives Police Service has received reports of more than 1,400 cases in just over a month into the new year.
Official crime statistics show that 1,417 cases have been recorded so far in 2026. Traffic accidents account for the largest share of reported incidents, with 399 cases, representing 28.2 percent of the total. Theft follows closely with 380 cases, or 26.8 percent. Other reported offences include drug-related cases with 231 reports, lost items at 139 cases, and assault with 74 cases.
Vandalism has been reported in 74 cases, domestic violence in 44 cases, and embezzlement in 33 cases. Robbery and sexual offences have each been reported in 17 cases, while counterfeit and forgery incidents account for nine cases.
The data indicates that traffic-related incidents remain a significant concern, while theft and drug-related offences also continue to feature prominently in police reports.
