Police in the Maldives have arrested two men in Gaafu Alif Maamendhoo following the seizure of 17.7 kilogrammes of suspected illicit substances during a court-authorised operation on 2 September 2026.
According to official statements from the Maldives Police Service, officers executed search warrants at two residential properties on the island, recovering packages of suspected drugs with a provisional combined weight of 17.7 kilogrammes.

Authorities identified the suspects as 29-year-old Azhadh Naseem of Fiyaathoshivila and 29-year-old Rishfan Raamizu of Roshaneege. Law enforcement sources describe both men as key figures alleged to hold leadership roles within a major regional drug smuggling and trafficking network.
Following their arrest, officers presented the two men before the court for a remand hearing. Magistrates granted police a five-day extension to hold both individuals in custody while investigations proceed.
The joint operation involved the Upper South Police Division (Gaafu Alif Atoll Police), the Counter Narcotics Intelligence Unit, and the Drug Enforcement Department. Officials stated that the raid forms part of an intensified, ongoing campaign launched in July 2026 to dismantle cross-border drug importation channels and localized distribution networks.
