The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) have declared their intention to contest together in the coming parliamentary elections scheduled for next year.
The decision was formalised during the PPM Senate meeting held last evening, where a majority in the senate expressed approval for the collaboration between the two political entities.
Notably, the PPM and PNC have a history of contesting elections as allies since the inception of the PNC. In the previous presidential election, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ran as a coalition candidate on the PNC ticket, showcasing the cooperative relationship between the two parties.
However, amidst this collaboration, former President Abdulla Yameen, a key figure within the PPM, made headlines by departing from the party on Thursday to establish a new political entity.
Senior lawyer Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, representing Yameen, stated that the decision to leave the party was motivated by a perceived reluctance within the PPM leadership to facilitate the party’s activities and a lack of interest in seeking Yameen’s consultation and advice.
