President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivians to place national interest above partisan and social divisions, describing it as the most important lesson to be drawn from the Hijri New Year 1448 AH.
In his address marking the Islamic New Year, President Muizzu extended greetings to the Maldivian people and the wider Muslim Ummah, while reflecting on the significance of the Hijra — the migration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions from Makkah to Madinah more than 1,400 years ago.
The President said the historic journey demonstrated how perseverance and steadfastness in the face of challenges can lead to success. He added that the Maldives’ progress and stability depend on unity, brotherhood and cooperation among its people.
Highlighting the example of solidarity shown by the Ansar and Muhajireen in Madinah, President Muizzu said similar values of friendship, compassion and mutual assistance should be strengthened within Maldivian society. He stressed that national development can only be achieved through collective effort and a shared vision, while urging citizens to work towards personal and social reform.
The President also reiterated that one of the government’s key policy objectives is to nurture a generation rooted in Islamic values and national identity. He described the Maldives’ Islamic unity as one of the nation’s greatest strengths and said the government remains committed to protecting Islamic principles, safeguarding national sovereignty, and ensuring justice and equality for all citizens.
Looking ahead, President Muizzu said the new year presents an opportunity to rebuild the economy and strengthen the country’s social fabric. He noted that modern global challenges require innovation, hard work and determination, while also calling on Maldivians to remember people suffering in conflict-affected regions, particularly Palestine.
In a separate post on X, the President noted that the new Hijri year marks the beginning of a historic period leading up to the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam. He expressed gratitude for the preservation of Islam in the Maldives over centuries and wished success, stability and prosperity for the nation.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also marked the occasion in a post on X, expressing gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon the Maldives and praying for continued prosperity and wellbeing for the Maldivian people in the year ahead.
