President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that children with thalassaemia have equitable access to all the rights and opportunities afforded by the nation, emphasising the need for these to be fully accessible.

In his message commemorating World Thalassaemia Day, celebrated on May 8, President Muizzu urged the public to embody compassion through both words and actions.

Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, he pointed out that the Maldives has one of the highest rates of thalassaemia in the world relative to its population. He emphasised the need to raise public awareness and improve access to treatment nationwide. The President also called on relevant authorities to prioritise the health and continuous care of children living with the condition.

President Muizzu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling the pledges made during the 2023 Presidential Election regarding the care and support of children with thalassaemia. He promised concrete action to resolve long-standing issues that have been overlooked, aiming to bring real relief and a better quality of life to affected children and their families.

Concluding his message, the President encouraged citizens to donate blood, describing it as a spiritually rewarding act. He also called on all Maldivians to show solidarity and compassion to every child battling the challenges of thalassaemia.

In March, protests erupted outside the Maldives Blood Services, where families of thalassaemia patients demanded the resignation of the Thalassaemia Centre’s leadership, frustrated by years of unaddressed concerns. Following the protests, President Muizzu met with the patients and their families. He pledged to transform the Thalassaemia Centre into a patient-friendly, responsive service provider.
