President to Attend SIDS Conference in Barbuda

The Chief Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, announced today that the President will depart for the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Development States (SIDS) tomorrow. The announcement came during a briefing at the President’s Office, during which key details regarding SIDS were shared with reporters.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and Special Envoy for Climate Change Ali Shareef attended the press conference to provide insights into the upcoming meeting.
The Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), scheduled to take place in Antigua and Barbuda from May 27 to 30, will focus on the theme “Charting the Course Towards Resilient Prosperity.” The conference aims to address the challenges faced by environmentally vulnerable and small nations, paving the way for their prosperity and sustainability.
The President is slated to attend the conference and deliver the national address at the UN’s SIDS, a decennial event. Climate change and its impacts and the need for concerted action to address them will be among the critical issues discussed during the conference.
During the briefing, Heena Waleed highlighted the significance of the conference and outlined the government’s objectives to benefit the Maldivian people and the nation as a whole. Minister Thoriq Ibrahim and Special Envoy Ali Shareef elaborated on the importance of the conference and the government’s agenda, emphasizing the focus on climate change resilience.
Additionally, the conference will shed light on three activities organized by the Maldives and relevant government institutions, highlighting the country’s proactive engagement in SIDS-related initiatives.
