On coming Sunday, the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) will initiate the nomination process for individuals aspiring to compete in the presidential election. Following recent legislative amendments, candidates will have a 14-day window to enter the electoral race.
According to the Maldivian Constitution, the country must hold a presidential election every five years. Since the implementation of the multi-party system, Maldives has witnessed three presidential elections, resulting in four individuals assuming the presidential office.
The fourth presidential election, under the multi-party system, is scheduled for September 9.
Commencing on the 23rd of this month, the election season has kicked off with campaign activities undertaken by participating parties and candidates. Currently, four political parties have expressed their intent to contest the election, with three candidates already receiving their presidential tickets.
The candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is actively campaigning in the provinces, while the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the Justice and Development Party (JDP) are also engaged in campaign activities outside the capital.
As part of the nomination process, a non-refundable fee of MVR 100,000 is required to officially enter the election race.
