In a recent development, the Maldivian government has sanctioned the involvement of private entities, both local and international, in the operation of drug rehabilitation centers across the nation. The decision, unveiled during a cabinet meeting on Sunday, was confirmed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu following discussions on a proposal submitted by the Homeland Security Ministry.

Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the principal secretary to the president on public policy, addressed reporters during a press briefing yesterday, shedding light on the cabinet’s resolution to initiate community-based rehabilitation programs in collaboration with experts. Emphasizing adherence to Maldives’ laws, regulations, and Islamic principles, Nazim stated that the rehab centers would be governed within the framework of established guidelines.

“The decision includes the implementation of the program in three specific areas initially: Velidhoo in N. Atoll, Kaashidhoo in K. Atoll, and an island in L. Atoll,” he detailed.

Presently, drug rehabilitation centers in the Maldives are exclusively administered by the government. This move signals a shift in strategy, marking a significant departure from the existing structure and introducing the prospect of private-sector involvement in addressing the challenges posed by substance abuse in the country.
