Q4 Sees Highest Number of Road Accidents with 639 Cases

The Maldives Police Services has disclosed the road accident statistics for the past year, indicating that the highest number of cases, totaling 639, were investigated in the fourth quarter.
The breakdown for the other quarters is as follows: 539 cases in the first quarter, 524 cases in the second quarter, and 606 cases in the third quarter.
The report further categorises the incidents based on various violations and infractions. Among the most common offences were driving without a valid license, with 1373 cases reported. Other notable violations included driving while the license is suspended (405 cases), speeding (157 cases), and violating traffic signs (282 cases).
Additionally, the report highlights infractions related to vehicle equipment and safety measures. These include driving without proper helmets (40 cases), not using appropriate lights (120 cases), and driving a non-roadworthy vehicle (447 cases).
Furthermore, the report provides data on the distribution of stickers issued for vehicle registration compliance. In the fourth quarter, motorcycles accounted for the highest number of stickers issued (5155), followed by cars (4709) and pickups (472).
Regarding parking violations, the report reveals that motorcycles were the most commonly towed vehicles across all quarters. In the fourth quarter, 322 motorcycles were towed for parking violations, while cars accounted for 27 towed vehicles.
Overall, the report serves as an overview of road safety issues and enforcement efforts in the Maldives, providing valuable insights for policymakers and law enforcement agencies.
