The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has initiated a large-scale training programme for technical personnel assigned to operate and maintain its newly acquired fleet of 230 heavy vehicles, which arrived in the Maldives during the first week of April.
The initiative forms part of the corporation’s broader efforts to accelerate infrastructure development across the country, with the fleet consisting of excavators, forklifts and dump trucks requiring specialised training and certification.
According to RDC Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem, a total of 108 employees from Malé and various atolls are currently undergoing training. The programme includes both theoretical instruction and practical sessions, with hands-on training being conducted on the industrial island of Thilafushi.
Training for vehicle operators and maintenance personnel is ongoing and is expected to continue until next week. The corporation has also prioritised the registration of the vehicles, a process described as being in its final stages, allowing for their deployment in the near future.
RDC is in the process of identifying recipient islands and projects, with an initial batch of machinery set to be allocated to 20 islands. The fleet is expected to support ongoing projects and future development activities in designated areas.
The shipment also included four tar plants, comprising one 80-tonne unit and three 40-tonne units, imported through a Chinese company to strengthen road construction capacity.
