Reclamation Works Resume at Giraavaru Falhu Under Binveriya Scheme

Reclamation works at Giraavaru Falhu, where land plots were allocated to Male’ residents under the previous administration’s Binveriya scheme, have resumed after a prolonged halt.

The previous administration had initially allocated 2,000 land plots from Giraavaru Falhu. However, the current administration later determined that the reclaimed area would not be sufficient to accommodate this number of plots while also providing space for essential services. As a result, recipients were given the option to switch their allocation from Giraavaru Falhu to Gulhifalhu.

A total of 2,210 Giraavaru Falhu land recipients applied to switch to Gulhifalhu, and a draw was held among the applicants in June to determine eligibility for plots in the alternative location.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Friday that reclamation works at Giraavaru Falhu had resumed, confirming that work restarted in the morning. The President also shared footage showing ongoing reclamation activity at the site.

The reclamation project at Giraavaru Falhu has been awarded to Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC). The project involves reclaiming 160 hectares of land from the lagoon. While approximately 50 hectares of reclamation had previously been completed, the project had remained stalled since that stage.

The current administration decided not to proceed with the allocation of 2,000 land plots from Giraavaru Falhu as originally planned, citing a lack of consideration for infrastructure and basic service requirements in the earlier decision. In line with this, the land use plan for the area was amended and made public this week.

Earlier, on 25 November, President Muizzu stated that reclamation works at both Giraavaru Falhu and Hulhumale’ Phase III were expected to be completed within three months. At the time, he noted that the same two dredgers used for Hulhumale’ Phase III would also be deployed to continue reclamation works at Giraavaru Falhu.
