MV+ News Desk | June 10, 2024

The family of a five-year-old girl Sadha Saudhulla, who died at Fuvahmulah Hospital in 2021, has expressed willingness to negotiate an out-of-court settlement, provided the state admits to medical negligence.

Sadha Saudhulla was taken to Fuvahmulah Hospital on October 3, 2021, with stomach pain and vomiting after being unable to receive services from a flu clinic. Her father, Saudhulla Ahmed Hassan Didi, reported that she passed away shortly after receiving an injection at the hospital.

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) found sufficient grounds to believe that the doctors and nurses were negligent in her treatment. The Commission also determined that the family had the right to sue for compensation.

Subsequently, the family filed a lawsuit against the Health Ministry in the Civil Court. During a hearing yesterday, the lawyer for Sadha’s parents stated that the family is open to negotiating an out-of-court settlement if the state acknowledges medical negligence.

The court granted the two parties two days to discuss and reach a decision.

At the hearing, the family’s lawyer, Mariyam Shunana, mentioned that Sadha’s parents preferred a settlement because the prolonged court process delayed justice.

Sadha’s death resulted in the suspension of the medical licenses of two doctors involved in her care. The HRCM investigation revealed that the medical staff treated the young girl without adequately reviewing her medical history and that there were delays in her treatment despite the urgent nature of her condition.
