Scam Losses Rise by Over MVR 40,000 Despite Fewer Cases Last Week
Scam-related losses grow despite drop in cases
The amount of money lost to scams increased last week despite a decline in the number of reported cases, according to the latest statistics released by the Police Anti-Scam Centre.
The centre reported losses of MVR 365,626 across 36 scam cases last week, compared with MVR 325,485 lost in 46 cases earlier this month. This represents an increase of MVR 40,141 in financial losses despite 10 fewer reported cases.

Police recovered MVR 117,439.50 from scam-related incidents last week. This was MVR 78,494.50 less than the MVR 195,934 recovered earlier this month.
E-commerce scams continued to account for the highest number of cases, with 24 incidents reported during the week. Police also recorded three currency exchange scams and two fraud cases.
Earlier statistics released by the Anti-Scam Centre showed that 122 scam cases were reported in June, a decrease of 35 cases compared with May. Financial losses also fell to MVR 914,698 in June from MVR 2.27 million recorded in May.
Of the total amount lost in June, police recovered MVR 598,678.
Police have previously stated that more than MVR 33 million has been lost to over 2,700 scam cases reported across the Maldives since last year.
