Sea-to-air cargo transshipments in the Maldives have seen significant growth, with over 1,200 tonnes transported to international markets in the first six months of this year, according to figures released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
The service was launched in March last year through a partnership between Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates Velana International Airport, and MPL. The initiative aims to offer businesses a streamlined and sustainable logistics model by combining land, sea, and air transport.
MPL reported that sea-to-air cargo operations are currently supported by 10 international airlines, connecting the Maldives to 15 global destinations. Between January and June, a total of 1,222 tonnes of cargo was moved under the programme, equivalent to the volume carried by 271 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers.
The partner airlines participating in the service include Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Swiss International Air Lines, Azerbaijan Airlines, Lufthansa, Saudia, Qatar Airways, ITA Airways, and Saudi Airlines.
MPL stated that the sea-to-air cargo service has already contributed millions in foreign revenue since its inception, and further expansion is planned to meet growing demand in the region.
