The Parliament is set to convene its second extraordinary session tomorrow with the aim of establishing the standing committees. This follows the closure of a previous extraordinary meeting shortly after its commencement.
The session, which adjourned on the 21st of last month, was halted to allow for a review and revision of the proposed changes to the committees following the departure of certain members of parliament from their respective parties.
According to Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef, another extraordinary session will be held subsequent to the previous one.
Among the issues to be addressed in the forthcoming session is the ongoing matter concerning the representation of party-affiliated members and independent members in the standing committees of the Parliament. This topic has remained a focal point of discussion and is expected to be addressed during tomorrow’s meeting.
The majority party in parliament, the MDP (Maldivian Democratic Party), has expressed its concerns over the delays in finalising crucial bills.
The Parliament recessed on the 22nd of last month due to the persisting concerns raised by the MDP’s parliamentary group. To address these concerns, they submitted a letter to the Speaker, urging the scheduling of extraordinary sessions.
