In a parliamentary session today, MDP South Henveyru MP Hussain Shaheem expressed dissatisfaction with the criteria used in determining the recipients of flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme during the tenure of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Shaheem, who had closely collaborated with President Solih and some ministers in the MDP government, moved a motion calling for the expedited allocation of land and flats to the recipients. During the debate on the emergency issue, he criticised the methodology used to assign points to the 4,000 flat recipients, describing it as unacceptable.
While acknowledging that the decisions were made within the party to which he belongs, Shaheem emphasised that the process was not conducted properly. He asserted that it was evident to the public that points were not assigned fairly, leading to widespread concerns.
Shaheem highlighted instances where adjacent houses in the same constituency did not receive equal consideration, questioning the fairness of the points system. He suggested that individuals without children had received flats, indicating irregularities in the allocation process.
Upon investigating complaints, Shaheem concluded that the government did not allocate sufficient time to verify the authenticity of information provided by flat applicants.
Despite having a full five-year term, he deemed it unacceptable that the MDP government did not prioritise this crucial verification process.
