The government has announced the introduction of a simplified process for extending tourist visas, set to take effect from 1 April, as part of efforts to enhance visitor convenience and support the tourism sector.

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim outlined the new measures during a weekly press conference held by the national ministerial committee established to address the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Under the revised system, tourists will be able to extend their visas through a streamlined online platform with minimal documentation requirements. The current 30-day tourist visa can be extended by submitting a photograph of the visa, completing an online application and paying the required fee, with approvals expected within 48 hours.

The initiative comes amid a relative decline in visitor arrivals, with authorities noting that a significant proportion of tourists typically travel via Middle Eastern airlines, routes that have been affected by the current geopolitical situation.

In addition to visa facilitation, the government is progressing plans to introduce specialised visa categories targeting digital nomads and content creators. These initiatives are expected to support guesthouse operators and contribute to the diversification of the country’s tourism offerings.
