Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been appointed as the interim leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during a national council meeting held in AA. Ukulhas, last Thursday night.
MDP’s Chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, confirmed the decision, noting that Solih was not present at the meeting.
Solih had previously held the position of the leader of MDP until his presidential term expired on November 17th. According to party regulations, this role is reserved exclusively for the incumbent Maldivian president from the party.
The national council meeting, spanning two days, addressed the vacancies in two key positions within the party – that of the leader and deputy leader.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed, the party’s previous leader, and Mohamed Shifaz, the former deputy leader, had both departed from MDP earlier in the year due to internal conflicts and are now members of a newly formed party called the Democrats.
The discussions during the meeting also delved into MDP’s future political plans. The party’s last national council meeting occurred on October 3, closely following Solih’s defeat in the presidential elections.
