The Supreme Court has issued an interim order to delay the execution of the High Court’s decision to pause the dredging operations at K. Gulhifalhu.
The High Court’s decision to pause the dredging operations at Gulhifalhu came yesterday in response to a file lodged by environmental activist Humaida Abdul Ghafoor in 2021. The complainant raised concerns about the purported environmental repercussions of the dredging work being conducted in the area.
Subsequently, the prosecution lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court, urging for an interim order to halt the implementation of the High Court’s ruling.
Former State Minister for Housing, Akram Kamaluddin has asserted that the government faces a potential financial liability of USD 300,000 per halted reclamation activity on Gulhifalhu, owed to Netherlands-based contractor Boskalis.
