The Thalassaemia Centre has begun operating every Friday for the first time in its 31-year history, expanding access to essential transfusion and blood donation services.

Mohamed Muizzu announced in a post on X that Friday operations commenced on 20 February 2026. The centre had not previously provided services on a Friday since it first opened on 29 December 1994.

According to the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, 14 transfusions were carried out on the first Friday of operation, while five individuals donated blood. He also stated that blood donation services will continue to be made available every Friday at designated times after Ramadan.

The expanded schedule is intended to make it easier for patients and donors travelling from the atolls to access services over the weekend without having to take leave during the working week.

The Thalassaemia Centre was relocated to Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumalé Phase I on 8 May 2024, where it continues to operate.
