Thariq Resigns as Deputy Leader of PNC’s Parliamentary Group

Ahmed Thariq, also known as Tom, has stepped down from his position as the deputy leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC)’s parliamentary group. 

Representing the Mahibadhoo constituency, Thariq tendered his resignation today. The specific reason for Thariq’s resignation remains unclear. While several PNC lawmakers have confirmed his departure, Thariq himself was not immediately available for comment.

Thariq along with Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid and Vilimale’ MP Mohamed Ismail, was elected as a deputy leader of PNC’s parliamentary group on 22 May, following the recommendation of the party’s leader, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

One of the most senior members of the current 20th parliamentary assembly, Thariq is among five lawmakers who act as stand-ins for the deputy speaker if necessary.

A former national football star,Thariq has served in Parliament since 2014 and is currently campaigning to become the president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
