Two Arrested in Maldives for Hit-and-Run Incident Involving Police Officer
The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed the arrest of two individuals following a hit-and-run incident involving a police officer.
The incident occurred in Hulhumale’ Phase 1 yesterday evening amid reports of violence in the area. According to MPS, the suspects attempted to flee in a car as police arrived at the scene.
A police officer intercepted the vehicle by standing in front of it and requesting the driver to stop. The car initially idled, but once the officer moved to the side, the individuals attempted to escape, running over the officer’s leg in the process.
Eyewitness accounts state that when the car attempted to reverse, the injured officer managed to get up and tried to stop the vehicle by grabbing the steering wheel. Despite efforts by two other officers on motorbikes, the car sped away.
One suspect was apprehended on the same day and remanded for 15 days. The second individual was arrested the following evening.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the MPS emphasising their commitment to ensuring justice and public safety.
