Velana International Airport (VIA) in the Maldives introduces a new smart gate system, in collaboration with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and the Maldives Customs Service, to streamline customs clearance and improve passenger experience.

Previously, customs officials would manually screen luggage and affix stickers to those requiring additional inspection. The new system replaces this with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags attached to luggage that trigger an alarm at the smart gate if further scrutiny is needed.

Commissioner General of Customs, Yoosuf Maaniu, highlighted the smart gate’s role in facilitating swift customs clearance for passengers. Additionally, he outlined the system’s potential to reduce costs and save time.

The new system is expected to improve security at VIA by enhancing the detection and prevention of illegal activities such as smuggling, terrorism, money laundering, drug trafficking, and the entry of prohibited items.

The inauguration of the smart gate service fulfils a pledge made by the Maldivian President and is part of the Maldives Customs Service’s strategic plan.
