VP Supports Fiscal Independence for Maldives Press

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has conveyed his eagerness for the financial autonomy of media establishments in the Maldives.

Speaking exclusively to Public Service Media (PSM) on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day and the seventh anniversary of PSM, the Vice President highlighted the government’s dedication to recognising and appreciating the diverse contributions of journalists.

Acknowledging the obstacles hindering the growth of journalists and media organisations, particularly concerning financial support, Vice President Latheef reiterated the government’s commitment to allocating a portion of the state budget to the media, as promised by President Mohamed Muizzu.

Furthermore, he disclosed that a plot of land in Hulhumale has been designated for media purposes, with plans underway to facilitate operations from there.

Emphasising the government’s intention to nurture a harmonious relationship with the media, Vice President Latheef highlighted President Muizzu’s proactive engagement with journalists prior to assuming office, aimed at understanding their concerns and challenges.

He affirmed the government’s ongoing dedication to maintaining a media-friendly approach, fostering positive transformations in collaboration with the press.
