The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun identifying individuals who have been dumping waste in common areas of Hiyaa Towers and has warned offenders to stop such behaviour.
In the Maldives, it is customary for families to refurbish homes and replace furniture ahead of Ramadan, which often leads to an increase in improper disposal of old household items in public spaces during this period.
A similar incident was recently reported at residential flats operated by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), where two individuals were fined for improper waste disposal.
Following the circulation of photographs on social media, images showed stacks of empty boxes and large pieces of furniture abandoned on the ground floor of Hiyaa Towers, particularly near elevator areas. The debris was later cleared by HDC employees.
HDC stated that the corporation was alerted to the illegal dumping incident at Hiyaa Towers on Wednesday. The official said that such behaviour is strictly prohibited and confirmed that efforts are underway to identify those responsible and instruct them to cease the activity. It remains unclear whether any formal legal action or penalties have been imposed on the offenders.
