The Vice Chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives, Ismail Habeeb, has revealed that various organizations, countries, and entities have engaged with the Election Commission over the past two months in relation to the forthcoming 2023 Presidential Election.

During this period, ambassadors from several prominent nations, including the United Nations, European Union, Commonwealth, US Aid, IFES, Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and India, held meetings with the Commission to observe the election proceedings and familiarize themselves with the preparations being made.

Discussions centered on the importance of conducting transparent and equitable elections. Additionally, talks were held regarding the provision of technical assistance by certain organizations and countries to aid the electoral process.

Furthermore, commissioners from various countries attended the recent Executive Board Meeting in Colombia, where they also met with Election Commission member Dr. Mohamed Zahir to observe the presidential election preparations and discuss means of enhancing bilateral ties.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union delegation, and the Commonwealth Pre-Assessment Mission are actively monitoring the arrangements being made for the upcoming election. In this context, the Commonwealth team specifically sought information about potential candidates who may participate in the presidential race and show promise.

“The presence of a significant number of international observers serves as an impetus to ensure the fair and unbiased conduct of the election process” Ismail Habeeb said in the tweet.

It is important to note that, apart from ensuring the presidential election is conducted freely and fairly, the Election Commission has not received any consultations from external or internal parties.
