Former Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has said he resigned from his ministerial post due to health concerns, while reaffirming his continued support for President Mohamed Muizzu and the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
Speaking at a PNC rally last night, for the first time since his abrupt resignation on Monday, Zameer said his health condition had prevented him from fully carrying out responsibilities as Finance Minister.
The government had earlier stated that Zameer stepped down due to health reasons.
Addressing supporters, he said that given the current circumstances, including the ongoing situation in the Middle East, he was unable to optimally perform his duties.
“In a situation like this, I shouldn’t be holding that position. When my health condition requires me to move toward a situation where I cannot remain there for much longer at this time, I shouldn’t just keep holding onto it,” he said.
Zameer added that despite his resignation, he would remain supportive of President Muizzu and continue to back the ideology of the PNC.
He initially served as Foreign Minister before being transferred to the Finance Ministry in September 2024. In April this year, the Public Enterprises portfolio was also brought under the Finance Ministry, expanding its scope.
Following his resignation, President Muizzu has appointed Hassan Zareer, former Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, as the new Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.
