The Need for Clear Guidelines and Policies for Disability Parking Spaces in the Maldives

MV+ News Desk | April 1, 2023

My name is Muawiyath M. Didi commonly known as Muthu, and I am a disability advocate in the Maldives. I am reaching out to you to express my concerns regarding the lack of guidelines and policies regulating disability parking spaces in our country. I have cerebral palsy, and I rely on a motorbike for my daily commute.

Last year while I was in Male’, I experienced a series of incidents where I received parking violation tickets for parking my motorbike in designated disability parking spaces. As my motorbike does not have any modifications to show my disability, I believe these violations are due to a lack of understanding and awareness among the parking authorities.

The current situation is causing undue stress and financial burden on me and other people with disabilities who rely on these parking spaces. The absence of clear guidelines and policies regarding the use of disability parking spaces leaves us vulnerable to these unfair violations.

Muawiyath M, Maldivian
