December’s PS+ free pickings are here

The free games for December for PS+ subscribers are:

  • Godfall: Challenger Edition (PS5, PS4)
  • Lego DC Super-Villains (PS4)
  • Mortal Shell (PS4)

In a year of PS+ freebies that included heavy hitters such as Control and Final Fantasy VII Remake, Sony is finishing up 2021 with a very mild month.

Godfall is a fantasy action game that is a cross between Destiny and Diablo and focuses on melee combat. The Challenger edition of the game that’s included in PS+ does not include the full game, and instead only has some endgame activities. If you wish to experience the leveling system and main storyline you will have to “upgrade” this version of the game with a separate purchase.

Lego DC Super-Villains is a fun romp through the DC world as one of many iconic DC villains as they attempt to protect the Earth in the absence of the Justice League. Many familiar voice actors return to reprise their roles for this game from the animated shows. As with other Lego video games, this is a very condensed and kid-friendly version of the stories we’re familiar with that also focuses on hidden collectibles.

Mortal Shell is this month’s offering to soulsborne fans. Originally released in late 2020, Mortal Shell’s gameplay and general aesthetic will feel very familiar to fans of the genre.

Ubisoft steps into the NFT game

Ubisoft just announced Ubisoft Quartz as the first AAA game enabled NFT platform. According to Ubisoft, this new initiative will allow players to get certain limited edition skins in a game and bring it to other games in the Quartz ecosystem or even trade it to other players. The first game to be included is Ghost Recon: Breakpoint with more games to be announced in the future.

It is not apparent why NFT integration is needed for this venture, as Steam has been doing the exact same thing with the Steam marketplace for a decade without bringing blockchain and NFT into the equation. All you need is a functioning database for players to be able to trade with each other. Perhaps Ubisoft is aiming to cash in on the NFT craze while the NFT hype is still ongoing.

The future of esports – MS Excel

The Financial Modeling World Cup 2021 took place last weekend. This Excel spreadsheet-based tournament was sponsored by Microsoft and had a prize pool comparable to actual gaming events with $10,000 up for grabs. Participants are given a set of data and expected to solve and/or present it all as a financial model in a spreadsheet – live on ESPN.

Century: Age of Ashes

If you’re a fan of aerial dogfighting and/or dragons then Century: Age of Ashes is just for you. The game just released on Steam as free to play and will come to consoles and mobile some time in 2022.

Century: Age of Ashes does what it advertises very well. Different dragons have different abilities, and it’s up to you whether to aggressively focus on one opponent or fly together with a teammate to take down an enemy. The game offers a variety of different modes including ranked for competitive players, and has been very well received so far.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is now out

Endwalker is currently one of the highest rated releases on Metacritic, and overall one of the most praised MMO games of all time. The latest expansion for Final Fantasy XIV is so successful that some players need to wait in queues for hours before they can log in – and this is after Square upgraded their server capacity a few months ago.

This is one game that can’t seem to do any wrong. Even with the server capacity issues, players have almost no negative complaints about the game from what we’ve been able to see online.

One Piece live action reveal

The cast and crew of the One Piece live action show was recently revealed. The cast seems to be made up of actors and actresses that are still new to the industry but have enough experience to show off their talent. Everyone revealed so far seems to share the passion the community has for their favourite show as well.

One Piece is still being written by Eiichiro Oda, and he serves as the executive producer on the live action Netflix adaptation. With Netflix putting more care into their different adaptations in the past few years, fans are feeling cautiously optimistic to see how One Piece will fare.
