Seagull’s Mighty Eggs Benny: The Quintessential Saturday Brunch

MV+March 13, 2021

Ah, the mighty Eggs Benedict. Much has been said about the origins of this classic brunch dish, but little has been settled. The most famous version of the story, dating back to the 1940s, goes that an American stockbroker had wandered into the Waldorf Hotel, spouting a bizarre, mish-mashed order to cure his morning hangover.

Fast forward to now, the dish has become a staple at most modern bistros, and we can't think of any place better to dig into it in Male' than the city's very own Seagull Cafe'.

Seagull sits pretty on the corner of the Chaandhanee-Fareedhee junction, exuding a cool, unpretentious ambiance that welcomes everyone to happen upon it. While the cafe's widely known to be one of the first joints to start serving gelato here, it's got an awfully tempting all-day breakfast menu that's bound to keep you coming back for more.

Made atop thick toasted bread, the Seagull Eggs Benedict comes with poached eggs covered in a luxuriously creamy hazelnut butter hollandaise (no, we didn't know that was a thing either). It's served with a bittersweet espresso and tomato jam, and while that may sound odd to some, it lends a layer of much-needed depth to the dish, elevating it to a whole other level.

Depending on your mood, the Benny can be made with your choice of smoked salmon, or if you're feeling particularly meaty, you can get a couple of grilled sausages too. For those who lean vegetarian, you definitely can't go wrong with the spinach and mushroom option.
