Wonder What You Missed From The Gaming World This Week?
Written by: Maldivian Gaming League
This week sees a diverse selection for this month’s free PS+ games.
The free games for the month of August for PS+ subscribers are:
- Hunter’s Arena: Legends
- Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
- Tennis World Tour 2
Hunter’s Arena is a battle royale that’s aiming to draw in the MMO crowd. The gameplay style is reminiscent of an action MMORPG, complete with roaming monsters on the map and even dungeons that you can complete for better gear before you face other players. This new style of PvPvE battle royale might be the breath of fresh air the genre needs on consoles.
The new Plants vs. Zombies game has clearly grown a lot from the original 2D PC games that made the franchise so popular. In Battle for Neighborville you can play as either Plants or Zombies, with multiple different classes and upgrades available for each team. The game provides a mix of PvE and PvP modes, as well as the classic “defend the garden against hordes of zombies” being a must-play in all its 3D free roam glory.
Enjoy sports games? Tired of playing the same old sports game year after year? Don’t worry, PlayStation’s got your back. Sort of. The last free title for August is Tennis World Tour 2. It’s got all the modes you can expect from a game in this genre– offline multiplayer, a career mode, online versus modes, and even a ranked competitive mode. If you’re a Tennis fan, this one might be right up your alley.
Nickelodeon is back with a truckload of nostalgia
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a brawler in the vein of Smash and Brawlhalla. All-Star Brawl intends to stand out from the competition by dipping into player nostalgia as everything in the game – from characters to levels – are from beloved Nickelodeon shows. Some of the characters already confirmed include:
- Oblina
- SpongeBob
- Zim
- Danny Phantom
- Nigel Thornberry
…and many more.
The developers intend to support the game for a long time and hope to turn it into an esports game with global tournaments. The game is set to release sometime this year.
Fortnite is the metaverse

Epic may be in a lot of legal trouble these days, but their golden child Fortnite is still going strong. The game just recently rewarded its players with another free virtual concert – this time starring hit pop star Ariana Grande. The live concert event brings the players along in a separate virtual space starting with some minigames and music before the main star came along riding on a planet. As usual, Epic held nothing back with the presentation and gave the viewers quite a spectacle.
Fortnite has introduced a wide variety of different experiences like this in recent years. Epic has been experimenting with where to take the game world next with these metaverse scale events. If Epic’s long-term plans for Fortnite bears fruit, then the future of the game might hold a lot more than just PvP and virtual concerts.
Final Fantasy 16 may be closer to release than we thought
Naoki Yoshida - also affectionately known as Yoshi-P – has been in charge of many Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest releases. This includes him being the head of both FF14: A Realm Reborn and Dragon Quest X – both of which are critically acclaimed MMORPGs.
His next title is the single-player focused Final Fantasy 16, and he commented in an interview that the next time we see a trailer for the game would be at a point where fans can buy the game soon after watching it and wanting to buy it. This hints that the next time FF16 is talked about will be very close to its release date. Yoshi-P also stated that there will be a big information reveal on a lot of Square-Enix games sometime this year.
The Last of Us TV Show

The TV show is going full steam ahead as principal photography ramps up. Video games generally have a poor track record of being translated properly onto TV or the big screen, but fans can take a breather this time around as the people in charge of the show are either huge fans of the game or directly worked on the game series. Neil Druckmann – director of TLoU games and co-president of Naughty Dog studios – is an executive producer on the show and several cast members from the game return as actors and actresses as well.
The show is reported to have a budget of “over 8 figures per episode”. The Last of Us is expected to have a much higher budget than even Game of Thrones. The fact that it is one of the most expensive shows ever to be made speaks volumes to how much faith HBO must have in it being a good product.
