The new academic year commenced today following a month-long break, with approximately 90,000 students returning to schools across the Maldives, according to the Ministry of Education.

More than 5,000 students have been enrolled in grade one throughout the country, with over 2,000 of them admitted to schools in Malé. The ministry also revealed that over 1,200 students have transferred from schools in the atoll provinces to schools in the Malé area, while more than 500 students have moved between schools within the atolls.

Of the total student population, around 84,000 are currently studying in government schools. The ministry noted that, as in previous years, the number of students enrolled in the Malé area remains comparatively high, with 33 percent of all students based in the capital region.

This academic year begins with 11,000 teachers, including 10,000 working in government schools. Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu stated that the academic year has started with all the necessary resources in place to support students’ learning.
