MTCC Begins Asphalt Laying on Ameenee Magu, Expect to Complete Up to STELCO in Seven Days

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun laying asphalt on the Ameenee Magu under its redevelopment.

Road Development Corporation (RDC) says that they have contracted this work to MTCC because they have yet to be given space for the machine brought to carry out the work.

MTCC expect to complete laying asphalt up to the STELCO building within seven days.

The project to re-develop Ameenee Magu has been the recipient of public outrage since it was contracted to RDC. Public criticism ensued after Planning Ministry awarded over MVR 84 million to RDC for this project.

Ameenee Magu’s re-development comes under the Male’ Streetscaping Project; a project launched by the incumbent government in 2020 with a total budget of MVR 462 million.

The Malé Streetscaping Project encompasses road resurfacing, the development of a conventional ducting system and underground utility lines, street beautification, parking solutions and the introduction of a city-wide public transport network.

The streets of Malé are classified into five categories; arterial roads, city roads, secondary roads, neighbourhood roads and pedestrian streets.

The project is designed to safely accommodate travellers of all ages and abilities—motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and public transport users—in addition to incorporating critical infrastructure for parking, stormwater drainage, dewatering for construction sites, and an active fire hydrant system.
