Open Mosquito Breeding Grounds in Hulhumale’

MV+ News Desk | April 28, 2024

In the suburb of Hulhumale, the presence of fresh-water open tanks has unwittingly created fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes, posing a significant public health concern.

Despite this, attention to these open breeding sites has appeared neglected amidst the ongoing fogging campaign initiated by the Greater Male’ area’s city council.

Recent updates on social media platforms have highlighted the start of fogging operations in Villimale’ city.

The Male’ city council’s pest control department is indeed actively engaged in fogging areas prone to mosquito breeding, including construction sites in Male and Villimale’. However, the oversight of open water tanks as breeding sites remains.

Meanwhile, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued advisories urging residents to remain vigilant against mosquito-borne diseases, with 59 reported cases of chikungunya this month in the Male’ area alone.
