His remarks came on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May.
Solih conveyed his greetings and best wishes to journalists across the country, underlining that the contribution of a free and independent press as guardians of democracy cannot be overstated. He stressed that to prevent any reversal of the Maldives’ democratic progress, it is crucial for journalists to be even more determined in their pursuit of truth.
This year, the Maldives was ranked 104th out of 180 countries in the Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), with a score of 52.46. While this marks a slight improvement from its 106th position in 2024, the country’s score remains largely unchanged, and it continues to be classified as a challenging environment for journalism.
World Press Freedom Day serves as a reminder of the importance of press freedom worldwide and the ongoing need to support and protect journalists in their work.
