The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has revealed that millions of rufiyaa remain unpaid in rent from tenants occupying social housing units in Hulhumalé, creating difficulties for the corporation in carrying out its operations.
According to HDC, it levies rent on all social housing units under its management, including those in Phase I of Hulhumalé and the Hiyaa Towers in Phase II, amounting to a total of 8,511 housing units. The corporation disclosed that the largest amount outstanding from a single unit currently stands at MVR 1,115,769.73.
While the government has reduced rent across all apartments in Phase I of Hulhumalé, HDC noted that social housing units in the same phase benefit from an additional 20 percent monthly rent discount. Despite these reductions, the corporation acknowledged that many tenants are not adhering to payment regulations after taking possession of their units.
HDC stated that the widespread issue of non-payment is hindering its ability to maintain and deliver essential services. The corporation added that efforts are underway to address and resolve the matter.
