Prime Minister Modi arrived in Malé on Friday morning, where he was received at Velana International Airport (VIA) and accorded a ceremonial welcome at Republic Square. His visit coincided with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The visit focused on reinforcing the longstanding Maldives–India partnership, with both leaders holding comprehensive discussions on enhancing cooperation across a range of sectors. Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and bilateral agreements were exchanged during the visit, reflecting a mutual commitment to further collaboration in areas such as economic development, healthcare, infrastructure, and climate resilience.
Among the key highlights was the joint virtual inauguration of several major development projects and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony held at Sultan Park, symbolising environmental solidarity and the enduring friendship between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi also donated two Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes to the Maldives, representing India’s support in strengthening emergency healthcare capacity.
The visit included the inauguration of the Dhoshimeyna Building, the new headquarters of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed later hosted a state banquet in honour of the visiting Prime Minister.
