A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Male’ after police recovered suspected drugs and a large sum of cash from a residence in the capital.
The Maldives Police Service identified the suspect as Mohamed Jaaif Abdullah, 22, from S. Feydhoo. He was arrested last Tuesday during an operation carried out in Male’ as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug smuggling in the Maldives.
Police said officers searched a house in the Galolhu ward under a court order, where they recovered 35 grams of suspected drugs and more than MVR 69,000 in cash.
Following his arrest, Jaaif was presented before the court for a remand hearing and was ordered to be held in custody for 15 days.
Police stated that the case remains under investigation.
Drug-related offences continue to pose a persistent challenge in the Maldives, with a significant number of young people arrested each year in connection with such cases.
