Police Commissioner Pledges Full Support for 12-Point Plan to Tackle Drug Crisis

The Maldives Police Service has pledged its full support to implement a new 12-point action plan aimed at tackling the nation’s drug crisis.

Speaking at the conclusion of the Inter-Agency Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Forum, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed announced that law enforcement will cooperate fully to execute the strategic agreements. Targeted specifically at the four southern atolls, the initiative seeks to dismantle systemic barriers to recovery and establish a lasting, holistic solution to substance abuse across the country.

Commissioner Mohamed delivered his address during the closing ceremony of the two-day event, titled “Inter-Agency Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Forum: Revisiting Gaps and Recovery in the South,” held from September 6th –7th at the Canareef Resort Maldives in Addu City.

The forum convened top leadership from across the justice and law enforcement sectors, including the Chief Judge of the Drug Court, the Acting CEO of the National Drug Agency (NDA), Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhadh Fikuree, the South Police Commander, alongside senior executive police officers.

Addressing participants, Commissioner Mohamed noted that the 12-point agreement would drive progress far beyond the four southern atolls, delivering a broader impact across the entire nation. Emphasising that drug addiction cannot be viewed in isolation as a local issue, he framed the crisis as an urgent national priority that demands a fully coordinated response from both the state and the wider community.

He also commended the ongoing support from key state bodies, including the Drug Court, the National Drug Agency (NDA), and the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Highlighting the challenges of translating forum outcomes into action, Commissioner Mohamed stressed that vital academic insights and policy proposals must not remain confined to paper. He urged stakeholders to focus on measures that deliver visible, real-world results for the public, reassuring attendees of the police service’s unwavering commitment to achieving the forum’s goals.

The Commissioner highlighted that combating illicit drugs is both a national duty and a religious imperative. He also expressed the need to replicate similar inter-agency forums across other regions, assuring that the police service will maintain steady support for non-governmental organizations striving to eradicate drug abuse from society.

Initiated by the Maldives Police Service’s Southern Area Command, the two-day workshop aimed to identify systemic barriers to drug treatment and rehabilitation across the four southern atolls, driving holistic solutions to the regional crisis.
