The Health Protection Agency (HPA) issued a public health warning today urging residents across the Maldives to take preventative measures against rising temperatures.

In the public advisory, the agency highlighted the severe risks of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstrokes, warning that prolonged exposure to high temperatures poses a significant threat to personal health and well-being whilst emphasising the importance of identifying early warning signs to prevent severe complications during periods of extreme heat.

To assist the public in managing heat-related emergencies, the HPA detailed critical symptoms and recommended first-aid protocols for both heat exhaustion and heatstroke. The key symptoms of heat exhaustion were identified as heavy sweating, dizziness, fatigue, a weak or rapid pulse, and muscle cramps. HPA advised individuals experiencing these signs to move immediately to a cooler, shaded location, sip water, and apply cold compresses or damp cloths to lower their body temperature.

Heatstroke was designated by the agency as a medical emergency requiring immediate professional intervention. Symptoms of a heatstroke include a high body temperature, confusion, an altered mental state, hot or dry skin, and a throbbing headache. The public must call emergency services instantly if someone exhibits these severe symptoms and assist by cooling the affected person while waiting for medical help.

Health officials additionally advise the public to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, wear lightweight and light-coloured clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
